“One Bad Apple” – Turnover

The newest “Hannah Swenson Mystery” movie, ‘One Bad Apple’ is airing soon on Hallmark Mysteries, and I can’t wait to see what new mysteries will be uncovered in this one! The book this movie is adapted from is called “Apple Turnover Murder” by Joanne Fluke, and thus, I found it only fitting to pay it homage. Since Hannah Swenson is a bakery owner and all around nice person, she is always delivering delicious treats to people around town. Especially at the police station! Maybe they are apple related this time around?

Ingredients:

-2 sheets frozen puff pastry (thawed out)

-3 apples (I use two Granny Smith and one Honey Crisp)

-1 tablespoon unsalted butter

-2 teaspoons cinnamon

-1/4 cup brown sugar

-1/8 teaspoon salt

-1/4 teaspoon almond extract

-A bit of flour to dust the surface

-One egg plus one teaspoon milk (for egg wash)

-large sugar crystals

Directions:

Start by taking the puff pastry out to thaw.

Then, peel and dice apples. In a small sauce pan, melt butter and add apples.

Next, add cinnamon, brown sugar, salt and almond extract. Let it simmer while stirring occasionally until caramelized. Let cool.

Once puffed pastry is thawed out, but still cold, sprinkle flour on a clean surface and roll dough out slightly to make a larger square shape. Then, cut large square into 4 smaller squares.

Scoop a small amount of the cooled apple mixture into the center of each square. Fold over into a triangle and pinch down edges. Use a fork to crimp the sealed edges. Then poke holes with fork all over top of dough for the steam to vent.

Lightly beat the egg and milk mixture, then baste all over top of apple turnover. Sprinkle with large sugar sprinkles. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes, until turnovers are golden in color and puffed up. Enjoy! CAUTION! Inside will be hot!
