Ingredients

  • 2 2/3 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tablespoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup avocado oil
  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

Equipment

  • 2 8-inch heart-shaped silicone cake pans

Method

  1. Prepare the butter. Melt the butter and allow it to cool slightly. Set aside.
  2. Mix the batter. In a large mixing bowl, combine all of the dry ingredients. Add the wet ingredients one at a time, mixing until everything is well combined.
  3. Divide the batter. Divide the batter evenly between two 8-inch heart-shaped silicone cake pans.
  4. Bake. Bake at 350°F for approximately 30 minutes, or until the cakes are baked through. Allow the cake layers to cool completely before frosting.
  5. Prepare the frosting. Prepare your favorite buttercream frosting, either homemade or store-bought. Add 1 teaspoon orange extract, then mix in purple food coloring until you reach your desired shade of purple.
  6. Decorate. Frost the cooled cake layers, then decorate with gold sprinkles and finish with a gold crown on top.
