Ingredients

Cinnamon Rolls
  • 1 package store-bought pizza dough (I buy fresh dough from the deli)
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon maple powder
  • heavy cream (enough to cover the bottom of the baking dish)
Maple Cream Cheese Icing
  • 1/2 brick cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup butter, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk (more as needed for a thinner glaze)

Equipment

  • Small square baking dish
  • Rolling Pin
  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

Make the Cinnamon Rolls
  1. Prepare the dough. Let the pizza dough come to room temperature. Roll it out into an oblong rectangle.
  2. Make the filling. Mix the softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and maple powder together until combined into a paste.
  3. Fill the dough. Spread the cinnamon-maple filling evenly over the dough, leaving about ½ inch uncovered around the edges.
  4. Roll and slice. Roll the dough tightly into a log, pinching any open spots closed. Trim off the ends without filling, then cut the log into 4 cinnamon rolls.
  5. Proof the rolls. Butter the bottom and sides of a small square baking dish. Place the rolls in the dish, swirl-side up. Cover with a clean dish towel and let proof in a warm place for 30 minutes.
  6. Add the cream. Pour enough heavy cream into the bottom of the baking dish to just cover the surface.
  7. Bake. Bake at 350°F for about 35 minutes, or until the cinnamon rolls are baked through and golden.
Make the Maple Cream Cheese Icing
  1. Beat the cream cheese and butter. While the rolls bake, beat the softened cream cheese and butter with an electric mixer until smooth.
  2. Add the flavorings. Add the maple syrup and vanilla and mix on low speed until combined.
  3. Finish the icing. Slowly add the powdered sugar, followed by the milk. Mix until smooth, adding a little more milk if you'd like a thinner glaze.
  4. Ice the rolls. Spread the maple cream cheese icing over the warm cinnamon rolls and serve.

Notes

  • Pizza dough: Let the dough come to room temperature before rolling so it's easier to shape.
  • Maple powder: Maple powder adds concentrated maple flavor to the cinnamon filling.
  • Proofing: Let the rolls proof in a warm place for the full 30 minutes before adding the heavy cream.
  • Heavy cream: Add just enough to cover the bottom of the baking dish.
  • Icing: For a thinner glaze, add additional milk a little at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
  • Serving: These cinnamon rolls are best served warm.
